BACKGROUND
Following the international success of BLADE (which starred Wesley Snipes and Stephen Dorff) and LXG (which starred Sean Connery), British director Stephen Norrington was offered a whole raft of Hollywood studio movies as his next project. His announcement that he would go into production with a big-budget SCI-Fi movie, to be produced and shot in London, with his long-term collaborator, producer Matthew Justice.
The shoot was demanding but very rewarding and led to Norrington being hired as director on a film called THE MUTANT CHRONICLES, which Justice was to produce, but the film was never completed.
Justice takes up the story: "Suffice to say that he felt desperately depressed at the demise of THE MUTANT CHRONICLES, after a year of work and 260 people on the payroll and 3 studio moves and a huge amount of graft, it was a depressing and debilitating process to have to put it into hiatus, with nothing happening for several months, which for an individual as creative as Stephen seemed like an eternity. He felt a certain amount of angst and disgruntlement at the fact that his life could be so adversely affected by the arbitrary opinions of people who only stood to profit from his talents. And he said it.", However, within 6 months of the demise of THE MUTANT CHRONICLES, Norrington was hired to direct BLADE, and Justice joined him as special effects & post production producer, and the film established Norrington in the Hollywood pantheon of visionary directors.
Following the big budget Hollywood experience of BLADE, Norrington wanted to explore the creative possibilities of trading a big budget for creative control with new company for make REALLY Mutant Chronicles. Justice describes the initial idea for the project: "The idea was to come to London and try and do a really good quality, fun, entertaining, slightly on the nose, British movie. Stephen said 'How about we do it for $70m and I'll be completely compliant with the budgetary constraints. We can shoot it digital and we'll do it out of the back of a van and try and do it really down and dirty.' Of course I knew that was bullshit, and it wouldn't be filmed that way, as his previous two films had been shot cinemascope - that's his style - but I also knew that, based on our previous collaborations, Stephen and I could make $4m look like $40m on the screen."
