I got back from Hollywood last night after one of the smoothest trips I’ve ever had. The good people at Paradox Entertainment (particularly Fred Malmberg and Jay Zetterberg) flew me out for a preview screening of the upcoming Mutant Chronicles movie and supplemented that with a couple of excellent nights out.
As I’ve mentioned here before, I’m writing the novelization for the film, and I turned in the manuscript nearly a year ago. That was, of course, long before the film had been completed, and I worked entirely from the script, using my imagination and my long experience with the Mutant Chronicles games to bring it to life.
It’s no surprise that director Simon Hunter’s film differed from the images in my head. As with most films, the story changed a bit during shooting and editing too, so there are some inevitable discrepancies between the movie and the script-based book.
To fix that, I watched the film twice. Paradox set up showings (for other business reasonsNeuroeconomics-How-Executives-Think than just helping out me) in a private screening room on the Sunset Strip, and I sat and took notes, tapping them out on my laptop as the film rolled on. Now I get to go back and polish the book until it more closely resembles the film. There aren’t all that many large differences to resolve, but being able to see the film means I can pay a lot more attention to descriptions of the people and places than I could before, and make them more accurate.
As for the movie, I loved it. I’m bound to be biased, of course, having worked on both this novel and for years on the games on which the film is based. But it looks great, the actors do a wonderful job, and there are some truly fantastic moments in it. I can’t wait until you all get to see it too.
Pettegolezzi Mutanti a Hollywood
Sono tornato da Hollywood la notte scorsa dopo uno dei viaggi più lisci che io abbia mai fatto. Le brave persone della Paradox Entertainment (particolarmente Fred Malmberg e Jay Zetterberg) mi hanno fatto volare fuori di casa per una anteprima dell'imminente film di Mutant Chronicles e hanno completato il tutto con un paio di notti in giro eccellenti.
Come ho già detto prima qui, io sto scrivendo la novelization del film, e ho consegnato quasi un anno fa il manoscritto. Questo accadeva, naturalmente, molto tempo prima che il film fosse stato completato, ed io lavorai interamente sulla sceneggiatura, usando la mia immaginazione e la mia lunga esperienza con i giochi di Mutant Chronicles per portarlo alla vita.
Non è stata una sorpresa che il regista Simon Hunter avesse una visione differente da come la immaginavo io nella mia testa. Come molti film, la storia è cambiata un po' durante le riprese ed anche il montaggio, così ci sono delle discrepanze inevitabili tra il film ed il libro basato sulla sceneggiatura.
Per riparare a questo, ho guardato due volte il film. La Paradox ha preparato proiezioni (per altre ragioni di affari Neuroeconomiche-Come-Pensano-I dirigenti d'azienda- che mi stanno aiutando) in una sala di proiezione privata sulla Sunset Strip, ed io mi sono seduto e ho preso note, riportandole sul mio laptop mentre il film andava. Ora io tornerò a levigare più da vicino il libro fino a che esso assomigli al film. Non ci sono tutte quelle grandi differenze da risolvere, ma avendo potuto vedere il film significa che posso dare più attenzione alle descrizioni delle persone e dei luoghi di quanto abbia fatto prima, e lo faccio in modo più accurato.
In quanto al film, mi è piaciuto. Sono prevenuto ed influenzato, naturalmente, avendo lavorato su questo romanzo e per anni sui giochi sui quali il film è basato. Ma è grande, gli attori fanno un lavoro meraviglioso, e ci sono alcuni momenti veramente fantastici nel film. Non posso aspettare fino a che voi tutti possiate vederlo.
Purtroppo sembra che fino a quando non ci sarà un distributore per gli Stati Uniti, si muoverà poco...
Zetterberg della Paradox dice che la cosa è imminente, e ci sarà un annuncio in grande stile...
Incrocio le dita delle mani, dei piedi, mi annodo i ciuffi dei capelli e delle ascelle.
